Fascinating Moray. I expect there's a lot more unexploded ordinance in the UK than we think. I was talking to a demolition contractor who uncovered a grenade in London a few years ago.
Re: the fat pollard, I checked with the site manager straight after the boom & later found the rather unimpressive crater where the bomb squad had moved the device a long way from the tree.

Hope the fat pollard survived the explosion!I was advised to not kick anything that looked like a rusty tin on the ground at Wrexham Industrial Estate in some of the undeveloped areas. The reason being that the estate was an ammunitions works during the second world war. Interestingly, there are hollow oak pollard trees on the estate and these are filled with concrete. Apparently they did this to prevent incendiary bombs become lodged in the hollow trees. Great that they decided to fill the tree rather than fell them.

When it comes to trees I think it should be done on a local level. If every community was to plant 20 trees, in areas they think will improve their landscape then I think we should most certainly have enough trees

Future of Urban Trees

We are planning a seminar on this at the garden museum, very much along the lines above. Have you published anything on life expectancy of urban trees? Current planning framework does not consider trees in enough details to ensure planting of big trees for the next few centuries.
