A huge thank you to team contributions for our December meeting ‘Celebrating Trees’ slideshow. It gave an opportunity to unite over a shared interest in trees, with different perspectives from each branch of the team.
We were treated to a colourful display of India in bloom from Supritha after she visited family earlier in the year. Also included was a vast Banyan tree and a 200-year-old White Silk Cotton tree, and Supri reminisced about her childhood shaped by local mythology and folklore.
Andy shared some truly stunning artistic images; we have since learnt some of these are ‘award winning’ which is no surprise. Some real talent there, and maybe a Treework calendar in the pipeline?!
Off on more travels with Claire with some striking images from various trips – but the giant sequoia dwarfing Claire as she stood at the foot of one in Kings Canyon National Park, California stole the show.
James B-W captured the beauty and character found in veteran trees from surveys in Castle Hill in North Yorkshire, Castle Coole in Northern Ireland and Cobham Woods in Kent.
James C showed us an oak tree in Bangor precariously clinging on to a cliff edge, he explained how most of the tree was hovering over empty space. It looked like some kind of tree Jenga!
Next, we were transported to a mystical landscape that could have been a backdrop to Lord of the Rings by Natalie, and her visits to Puzzlewood in Gloucestershire (which has in fact been used in film production, such as Merlin and Doctor Who).
Thank you to Matt for digging out some old photos from the archives, interesting to see members past and present out in the field together.
Luke shared a variety, from the artistic to the technically questionable, notably an outdated practice of bricking up a tree to support from the inside – seen in a Tokyo cemetery.
A great selection of holiday shots from Lois, showing how life unfolds around trees in all parts of the world. We especially liked one of some locals drinking beer at a table formed around a large tree trunk!
Some wayward springer spaniels made their way into some shots – showing us Philippa’s daily walking trails and bird nest detection. (Any excuse to include the dogs!)
Rachael showed us how trees can function as great playgrounds for kids, with one of her boys hanging from the boughs. And some trees which she has known since her own childhood, reminding us that trees can be true gatekeepers of precious memories.
Simon concluded the slideshow by illustrating the Miyawaki method (named after Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki) which is currently being used in a project in Eastleigh, Hampshire which prompted some discussion and thought. Fascinating stuff.
It was a very eclectic mix of images that highlighted the diversity of experience across the Treework Team – whether we are an arboriculturist surveying trees every day, or a CAD / GIS Specialist producing maps, whether we are responsible for sales, or administration, or operations management, we all have a shared connection with trees.
