Presenting at AA Conference

The speakers for the Arboricultural Association Conference have been announced.

There is an exciting lineup of speakers and subjects for the conference at Warick University on 15 – 17 September.

Our Director Luke Fay will be presenting with Joe Fennell on Tree allometry: What is it and how can we use it to improve arboriculture?

The presentation will explore:

  • What is allometry?
  • How the study arrived at the calculations.
  • What are the issues with the data that we will overcome with future studies?
  • A visual presentation of how the allometric equations are used to model 2D and 3D trees and tree canopy growth, CAVAT value and carbon sequestration over time.

It will also be call to action: the arboricultural profession has an amazing opportunity to utilise the data that we have collected on trees to improve our knowledge and practice of tree care.

This presentation builds on their work analysing a large set of measured tree data, from which they developed the Handbook of UK Urban Tree Allometric Equations and Size Characteristics and the Open British Arboricultural Record Dataset (OpenBARD).

Since making these resources available online the Handbook has been has had 2,529 reads and OpenBARD has been downloaded 150 times. A link to a post about these is in the comments.

Joe and Luke are also running two workshops with delegates to explore opportunities for better arboriculture that are offered by the data that is collected and held by the arboricultural industry. More on this later…

Other speakers at the conference include: Beau Brodbeck, James Chambers of TMA, Valentino Cristini, David Evans, Juan Estrada García, Steven Pearce, Wendy Batenburg, Andrew Benson, Matt Combes, Michael Johnson, Alasdair Nicoll, Dorella Pinter-Burus, Ed Pyne and Malin Rivers.

We are all looking forward another brilliant conference.
