Treework Allometry

A while ago Treework Environmental Practice started working with Joe Fennell and the The Open University on the, UK-based, Big Tree Data Project.

We put a call out for measured tree survey data and were grateful to receive over 20,000 tree records, to add to our own contribution, from Marco Bartolini, Bartlett Tree Experts, Barton Hyett Associates Ltd, Forest Research, Oxfordshire County Council, SHARON HOSEGOOD ASSOCIATES LTD, TMA Environmental Consultants, Tree Frontiers Ltd and Wharton Natural Infrastructure Consultants.

Now, we are delighted to share that Joe and Treework Managing Director and Senior Arboricultural Consultant Luke Fay have published a Handbook of UK Urban Tree Allometric Equations and Size Characteristics.

This document provides Excel functions for calculating allometric relationships between Stem Diameter, Height and Crown Spread by species and genus and will be a tremendous support with 2D and 3D growth modelling of trees, including canopy cover.

As can be expected on a project of this magnitude, there is always room for improvement and there are plans to develop greater confidence through the application of a much larger dataset and further ground-truthing.
